Valluvar speaks of one who is beyond both desire and dislike. Those who follow such a state of balance and wisdom are not easily troubled by life's difficulties. The Kural teaches that suffering often grows from attachment to what we want and resistance to what we do not want.

Many of our worries come from expecting life to go exactly as planned. We feel frustrated when we do not get what we want and unhappy when situations do not match our preferences. A person who learns to accept success and failure with balance develops inner peace. For example, two people apply for the same job. One becomes bitter and miserable after rejection. The other accepts the outcome, learns from the experience, and moves forward. The second person still faces challenges, but suffers far less because they are not controlled by disappointment.
