Modern interpretation

Every lasting achievement starts with a foundation. A happy family depends on trust. A successful career depends on discipline. A strong friendship depends on honesty. Just as a house needs a solid foundation before its walls can stand, our lives need strong values before success can truly last.

Modern interpretation

Many of our worries come from expecting life to go exactly as planned. We feel frustrated when we do not get what we want and unhappy when situations do not match our preferences. A person who learns to accept success and failure with balance develops inner peace. For example, two people apply for the same job. One becomes bitter and miserable after rejection. The other accepts the outcome, learns from the experience, and moves forward. The second person still faces challenges, but suffers far less because they are not controlled by disappointment.

Modern interpretation

Many problems in life begin when we act without understanding the full picture. We make quick judgments, react emotionally, or follow misinformation. People who actively seek truth, wisdom, and self-awareness make better decisions and avoid many unnecessary troubles. For example, during a misunderstanding between friends, one person immediately gets angry and ends the friendship, while another takes time to understand what really happened before reacting. The second person avoids pain because they chose clarity over confusion. This Kural reminds us that wisdom protects us from the consequences of actions driven by ignorance.

Modern interpretation

Many problems begin when we act on every temptation that comes our way. We may spend money we cannot afford, speak in anger, overindulge in pleasures, or chase short-term satisfaction without thinking about the consequences. People who learn to pause, think, and control their impulses make better decisions and build stronger lives. For example, when someone receives a hurtful message, their first impulse may be to react immediately in anger. Instead, they wait, calm down, and respond thoughtfully the next day. That one act of self-control can save a friendship, a relationship, or even a career. This Kural teaches that true freedom comes not from doing whatever we want, but from having the strength to choose what is right.

Modern interpretation

Everyone faces worry at some point. We worry about our health, family, money, career, relationships, or the future. Many people try to escape worry by constantly staying busy, seeking distractions, or waiting for problems to disappear. Yet peace rarely comes that way. Real peace comes when we develop wisdom, perspective, and trust in values that are greater than our immediate fears. For example, two people face the same financial setback. One becomes overwhelmed with anxiety and loses hope. The other accepts the situation, focuses on what can be controlled, and moves forward one step at a time. Their problems may be similar, but their state of mind is very different. This Kural reminds us that inner strength and wisdom help us face life's challenges without being consumed by worry.

Modern interpretation

Life often feels like sailing through rough waters. People face setbacks, failures, temptations, disappointments, and difficult decisions. During such times, talent, wealth, or intelligence alone may not be enough. What often helps people survive and recover is their character, values, and sense of right and wrong. For example, a business owner faces financial difficulties and is tempted to deceive customers to make quick money. Instead, they remain honest and transparent. The struggle may continue for a while, but their integrity earns trust and support that eventually helps them move forward. This Kural teaches that when life's storms arrive, strong values become the anchor that keeps us from sinking.

Tamil original ·

Modern interpretation

Having intelligence, talent, wealth, or influence alone does not make life meaningful. These abilities are valuable only when guided by good character and wisdom. For example, a highly successful person may have money, status, and power, but if they lack integrity and compassion, people may fear them rather than respect them. Another person may have fewer achievements but lives with honesty, humility, and kindness. Over time, that person earns genuine trust and admiration. This Kural reminds us that our true value comes not from what we possess, but from the values that guide how we use our abilities.
