Modern interpretation

Give to those in need and build a life people genuinely respect, nothing else you gain in life matters quite as much. Reputation earned through generosity outlasts everything else. For example, someone remembered fondly for their generosity leaves behind something far more valuable than whatever wealth they kept for themselves.

Modern interpretation

Whatever people end up praising someone for, in the end, usually comes down to how generously they treated those who had less. Kind acts are what people actually remember. For example, when a community speaks fondly of someone years later, it's almost always because of what they gave, not what they owned.

Modern interpretation

Almost nothing in this world truly lasts except a good reputation honestly earned. Everything material eventually fades or gets used up. For example, money and possessions get spent or worn out, but people still talk about someone's kindness or integrity long after they're gone.

Modern interpretation

Earning a genuinely good, lasting name in this life carries a weight that outshines even cleverness or learning on their own. What you build through good character stands out further than mere cleverness. For example, a teacher remembered for their character often ends up more respected, over time, than one merely known for being smart.

Modern interpretation

Only truly exceptional people can turn hardship into something that grows their good name, and turn even their own passing into something that cements it further. Their character shines brightest under pressure. For example, someone who keeps helping others despite serious illness, right up until the end, is remembered long beyond their lifetime.

Modern interpretation

If you're going to step into something, do it in a way that actually earns respect; if you can't, it's better to sit it out entirely. Half-hearted participation helps no one, including yourself. For example, joining a team just to take up space does less for you than waiting until you're ready to genuinely contribute.

Modern interpretation

If people look down on you, the real question to ask is why you're not living in a way that earns their respect, not why they're being unkind. Blame is easier than self-reflection, but far less useful. For example, instead of resenting classmates who mock a lack of effort, it helps more to ask what changed effort could actually fix.

Modern interpretation

Failing to leave behind any kind of good name that outlasts you is considered, by pretty much everyone, a real disgrace. A life that leaves nothing behind is seen as wasted. For example, people remember a mentor's guidance for decades, while someone who never bothered to help anyone is quickly forgotten.

Modern interpretation

Even the land itself seems to give less when it's carrying someone who never built a name worth remembering. A life without purpose leaves the world around it poorer too. For example, a community thrives around people known for their contributions, but barely notices when someone who added nothing passes through.

Modern interpretation

Only people who live without shame are really living; those who live without any good name to their credit might as well not be alive at all. A good name is what makes a life count. For example, someone remembered only for broken promises has, in a real sense, left nothing of themselves behind.
