Modern interpretation
Kindness is the richest form of wealth there is, since even the most small-minded, selfish people can still end up with plenty of money. Money alone says nothing about a person's worth. For example, a wealthy person known for cruelty has far less real wealth than a modest person known for genuine compassion.

Modern interpretation
Look for the right path in life and choose to act with kindness, because however you examine it, kindness is what actually supports you in the end. Every other measure of a good life comes back to this one. For example, someone who treats people fairly through hard times tends to find help coming back to them exactly when they need it most.

Modern interpretation
People whose hearts genuinely hold kindness never end up trapped in a bitter, dark existence. Kindness keeps a person's world from turning cold. For example, someone known for treating others gently tends to build a life surrounded by people who show up for them too.

Modern interpretation
Someone who protects other living beings and genuinely acts with kindness never has to live in fear of consequences catching up with them. A clear conscience removes a lot of quiet fear. For example, a person known for treating even animals and strangers gently rarely has to watch their back the way someone with a cruel reputation does.

Modern interpretation
Genuine hardship rarely catches up with people who consistently act with kindness, you can see it play out all around, everywhere in the world. Kindness tends to attract support when it's needed most. For example, someone known for their compassion tends to find people rallying around them exactly when things get hard.

Modern interpretation
People who abandon kindness and make a habit of cruelty are, in a real sense, people who've forgotten what actually matters in life. Chasing gain at others' expense costs more than it earns. For example, someone who tramples over others to get ahead may gain money or status, but ends up losing the parts of themselves worth having.

Modern interpretation
Just as someone with nothing to their name struggles to get by in this life, someone without any kindness in them has nothing waiting for them beyond it either. Kindness is what a good life is ultimately built on. For example, wealth might buy comfort here, but only kindness builds the kind of legacy that outlasts a single lifetime.

Modern interpretation
Someone who loses their wealth can always work their way back to prosperity someday, but someone who loses their kindness has lost something far harder to rebuild. Losing your character costs more than losing your money. For example, a person who goes broke can recover in a few years, but someone who becomes hard-hearted rarely finds their way back to who they used to be.

Modern interpretation
Look closely, and any 'good deed' done by someone without real kindness is as hollow as someone claiming to understand a truth they never actually grasped. It looks like virtue from the outside but isn't. For example, donating money publicly while treating people cruelly in private isn't the virtue it appears to be.

Modern interpretation
Before mistreating someone weaker than you, stop and remember exactly how it feels to stand nervously in front of someone stronger than yourself. Everyone is someone else's stronger or weaker in turn. For example, a senior student about to bully a junior should recall how intimidating their own seniors once felt to them.
