ஒப்பாரி யாங்கண்ட தில்.
Modern interpretation
Wicked people may look exactly like everyone else, but their lack of character sets them apart. A polite-looking classmate who secretly bullies others shows why appearance alone cannot prove goodness.

நெஞ்சத்து அவலம் இலர்.
Modern interpretation
People who know right from wrong may worry about living well, while the shameless seem carefree because they feel no such concern. Someone who cheats without remorse may look happier than the honest student who wrestles with conscience.

Modern interpretation
The low behave well mainly because they fear punishment; sometimes they behave better when they expect a reward. An employee who follows safety rules only when a supervisor is watching has not developed true character.

A mean person sees someone enjoying good food or clothing and looks for a fault to attack. If a classmate gets a new phone through honest work, jealousy may lead a petty person to spread rumors.

எற்றிற் குரியர் கயவரொன்று உற்றக்கால்
விற்றற்கு உரியர் விரைந்து.
Modern interpretation
When trouble comes, the mean may quickly sell their loyalty or freedom to escape it; that is what they are fit for. A person who abandons every principle as soon as money or pressure appears cannot be trusted in a crisis.
