நயந்தவர்க்கு நல்காமை நேர்ந்தேன் பசந்தவென்
பண்பியார்க்கு உரைக்கோ பிற.
Modern interpretation
I agreed to let the one I love leave; now that separation has made me pale, whom can I tell? Saying you are fine with a partner's decision can feel different once you are alone with its consequences.

அவர்தந்தார் என்னும் தகையால் இவர்தந்தென்
மேனிமேல் ஊரும் பசப்பு.
Modern interpretation
Paleness spreads over my body as though proud to say that my beloved caused it. When separation shows on your face, even your appearance seems to announce who you are missing.

சாயலும் நாணும் அவர்கொண்டார் கைம்மாறா
நோயும் பசலையும் தந்து.
Modern interpretation
He took my beauty and shyness and left me love-sickness and pallor in return. After someone leaves, the sadness can change how you look and how freely you carry yourself.

Modern interpretation
I think of him and speak only of his good qualities, yet this pallor has appeared anyway. Even when you remember someone fondly and say nothing bitter, missing them can still show on your face.

மேனி பசப்பூர் வது.
Modern interpretation
Look there—my beloved is leaving; look here—paleness is already spreading over me. When a loved one walks away, the stress can show in your face before you have time to hide it.

முயக்கற்றம் பார்க்கும் பசப்பு.
Modern interpretation
Just as darkness waits for a lamp to fade, paleness waits for my beloved's embrace to loosen. A small change in a close relationship can be enough for worry to appear.

புல்லிக் கிடந்தேன் புடைபெயர்ந்தேன் அவ்வளவில்

Modern interpretation
I was lying close to him, but moved only a little, and paleness rushed over me at once. After a warm goodbye, even a brief distance can suddenly make you feel the loss.

Modern interpretation
People say only that she has grown pale; no one says that her beloved has left her. Others may notice the visible sadness while ignoring the separation that caused it.

பசக்கமன் பட்டாங்கென் மேனி நயப்பித்தார்
நன்னிலையர் ஆவர் எனின்.
Modern interpretation
If the beloved who persuaded me to accept his departure is truly a good and caring person, let my body grow pale as it must. When you agree to a loved one's choice, you may still bear the physical cost of that separation.

பசப்பெனப் பேர்பெறுதல் நன்றே நயப்பித்தார்
நல்காமை தூற்றார் எனின்.
Modern interpretation
If no one blames the beloved who persuaded me to let him go, I would rather be known as the woman who turned pale. When people protect the person who left, even being known for the sadness feels preferable.
