Kural 181

Modern interpretation
Someone might not live a particularly virtuous life, but if they at least don't talk badly about people behind their backs, that's still something genuinely good about them. Not gossiping is its own quiet virtue. For example, a classmate who never joins in when others start mocking someone who's not around deserves credit for that, even if they're far from perfect otherwise.

Modern interpretation
Smiling warmly at someone's face while tearing them apart the moment they leave the room is worse than almost any other kind of wrongdoing, because it's a betrayal wrapped in fake kindness. For example, complimenting a friend's outfit to their face and then mocking it the second they walk away does more damage to trust than an honest disagreement ever would.

Modern interpretation
Living a life built on fake smiles and behind-the-back gossip corrodes something important about who you are, in a way that's genuinely costly, even if no one calls you out on it. For example, someone who keeps up a friendly front with people they constantly badmouth in private ends up losing their own sense of integrity, whether or not anyone notices.

Modern interpretation
It's fine to tell someone something critical honestly, to their face, even if it's not gentle. But don't say things about them behind their back without thinking through the damage it could cause once it gets around. For example, telling a friend directly that their behaviour upset you is fair; complaining about them to everyone else while acting normal around them is not.

Modern interpretation
Someone who talks a lot about doing the right thing but still gossips cruelly about others behind their backs reveals, through that pettiness, that their talk about virtue was mostly just talk. Actions expose what words can hide. For example, a person who lectures others about kindness but constantly badmouths coworkers isn't as principled as they present themselves to be.

Modern interpretation
Someone who makes a habit of exposing other people's flaws tends to eventually have their own flaws picked apart and exposed just as thoroughly, often by the very people they gossiped to. What goes around tends to come around here. For example, someone known for spreading rumours about classmates often finds themselves the subject of rumours once people stop trusting them.

Modern interpretation
People who never learned how to nurture a friendship with warmth and honest conversation often end up damaging even close relationships through gossip, without really meaning to. It's often carelessness rather than malice. For example, someone who vents about a friend's flaws to other mutual friends, instead of talking to the friend directly, can end up losing that friendship entirely.

Modern interpretation
If someone is willing to badmouth even their closest friends the moment they're out of earshot, imagine what they're willing to say about people they barely know. Their loyalty clearly doesn't run very deep. For example, noticing a friend gossip cruelly about another close friend is a good clue about what they might be saying about you when you're not around.

Modern interpretation
It's almost strange how much gossip people quietly tolerate, as if putting up with someone's constant backbiting were itself some kind of patience. But that tolerance has limits, and reputations eventually catch up with the people who abuse it. For example, a chronic gossiper might get away with it for a while, but people eventually start keeping their distance once the pattern becomes obvious.

Modern interpretation
If people scrutinized their own mistakes with the same sharp attention they give to other people's mistakes, there would be a lot less unnecessary conflict and hurt in the world. Self-awareness tends to soften judgment of others. For example, someone quick to criticize a friend's mistake might reconsider if they took a moment to remember their own recent slip-up.
