செல்லாமை உண்டேல் எனக்குரை மற்றுநின்

வல்வரவு வாழ்வார்க் குரை.

Modern interpretation

If you are staying, tell me plainly. If you must leave and return soon, tell that promise to those who may still be alive when you come back. When a partner says they will be away, the uncertainty can make every day feel unbearable.

இன்கண் உடைத்தவர் பார்வல் பிரிவஞ்சும்

புன்கண் உடைத்தால் புணர்வு.

Modern interpretation

His look once made me happy, but now even being close to him hurts because I am already afraid of losing him. When someone you love is preparing to leave, a happy moment can be shadowed by worry.

தேறியார்க்கு உண்டோ தவறு.

Modern interpretation

He told me not to fear and promised he would not leave; if he goes, how can believing him be my fault? When someone breaks a reassuring promise, the person who trusted it is not to blame.

நீங்கின் அரிதால் புணர்வு.

Modern interpretation

If you want to protect my life, do not let my beloved leave. Once he goes, finding our way back to each other may be nearly impossible. A couple should face a difficult separation before it becomes permanent.

பிரிவுரைக்கும் வன்கண்ணர் ஆயின் அரிதவர்

நல்குவர் என்னும் நசை.

Modern interpretation

If he is hard-hearted enough to announce that he is leaving, I should not expect him to return and show tenderness. When someone says goodbye without concern for your pain, holding on to hope can only hurt more.

Living in a place where no one cares for you is painful, but being separated from the person you love is worse. Moving to a new city is hard; missing the one person who feels like home can be harder.

விடிற்சுடல் ஆற்றுமோ தீ.

Modern interpretation

Fire burns only when you touch it, but love's pain burns even when the beloved is far away. A person can be hurt by longing while sitting alone with no one near.

Modern interpretation

Many people may agree to a painful separation, survive the grief, and keep living afterward—but I do not know how I could. When a partner leaves for work or duty, staying strong can feel possible for others and impossible for you.
