Modern interpretation

A good person will not hurt others even to gain wealth, status, or a more comfortable life. Success bought with someone else's suffering is not true greatness. For example, taking credit for a coworker's work may bring a promotion, but it damages both fairness and trust.

Modern interpretation

A person of character does not return harm for harm, even when someone has deliberately wronged them. Refusing revenge protects your own integrity. For example, answering a hostile classmate with clear boundaries instead of an insult keeps the conflict from spreading.

Modern interpretation

Hurting someone who wronged you without cause brings lasting sorrow instead of relief. Revenge adds a new wrong to the original one and can trap you in regret. For example, posting private information about a bully may feel satisfying at first, but it can create consequences you cannot undo.

Modern interpretation

The best way to punish someone who harmed you is to answer with such kindness that they feel ashamed of their behavior, then stop keeping score. This does not excuse the wrong; it refuses to become cruel in return. For example, helping a difficult teammate finish fairly can expose the difference between your conduct and theirs.

Modern interpretation

Knowledge has little value if it does not help us protect others from pain as carefully as we protect ourselves. Understanding becomes wisdom only when it leads to care. For example, someone who knows how humiliating bullying feels should step in when another person is being targeted.

Modern interpretation

Do not do to another person what you already know causes pain from your own experience. Your past suffering can teach you how to treat others better. For example, if being left out once hurt you, make room for the new person instead of repeating it.

Modern interpretation

The highest virtue is refusing to knowingly harm anyone, even in a small way, at any time. Good character begins with what we choose not to do. For example, skipping a cruel joke about someone's weakness can protect their dignity.

Modern interpretation

If you have felt how painful a wrong can be, why would you deliberately give that same pain to another living being? Personal experience should awaken compassion. For example, after being embarrassed in public, do not pass that humiliation on to a quieter classmate.

Modern interpretation

Harm done to others can return to the person who caused it, often when they least expect it. The verse pictures this return as quickly as morning wrongdoing followed by evening trouble. For example, a false rumor may later destroy the trust the rumor-spreader needs from others.

Modern interpretation

People who want a life free from harm should not cause harm to anyone else. Pain follows those who make pain their habit. For example, if you want a peaceful online life, do not harass people and then be surprised when conflict comes back to you.
