Kural 101

1 of 10

Tamil original ·

Modern interpretation

No repayment, not even the whole world, can match the value of help someone gives you when they owed you nothing and expected nothing back. That kind of generosity is priceless because it comes from pure goodwill. For example, a stranger who helps you fix a flat tire on a lonely road, asking for nothing in return, leaves a debt of gratitude that money can't settle.

Modern interpretation

A favour's true worth isn't measured by its size but by when it arrives. Something small given exactly when you're struggling can matter more than a bigger gift offered later. For example, a classmate lending you bus fare on the one day you're stranded means more than a lavish gift months after the crisis has passed.

Modern interpretation

When someone helps you without calculating what they might get back, that generosity deserves to be valued as something vast, bigger than the ocean. Real kindness isn't a transaction. For example, a senior who tutors a junior for free, with no thought of credit or reward, is offering something far bigger than the time it took.

Modern interpretation

People who truly understand the value of a favour treat even the smallest one as something enormous. Gratitude isn't about the size of the gift; it's about recognizing what it meant. For example, remembering the friend who lent you one pencil during an exam, years later, shows real appreciation, however tiny the act seemed at the time.

Modern interpretation

How much we owe someone for their kindness isn't decided by how big the favour was, but by the character of the person who received it. A truly decent person repays even a small kindness generously. For example, someone who once covered your bus fare might, years later, go out of their way to help you move house, simply because they never forgot.

Modern interpretation

Never abandon people who stood by you through real hardship, and never forget those with a genuinely good character. Loyalty to the people who mattered when things were hard is worth protecting for life. For example, staying in touch with the friend who helped you through a rough breakup, even after your lives take different paths, honours that bond.

Modern interpretation

The people who helped you through your darkest moments deserve to be remembered for as long as you live, not just until things get easier. Real gratitude doesn't have an expiry date. For example, the teacher who believed in you during a difficult year is someone worth thanking again, even a decade later.

Modern interpretation

It's fine, even wise, to let go of a wrong someone did to you the moment it happens, since holding onto grudges only weighs you down. But a genuine kindness deserves to be remembered, not brushed aside. For example, forgiving a friend's thoughtless comment quickly, while still remembering the time they helped you through a crisis, shows balanced character.

Tamil original ·

Modern interpretation

Even if someone who once helped you does something as hurtful as betrayal later, recalling the good they did earlier can dissolve the pain. It doesn't excuse the wrong, but it can soften the grudge. For example, remembering how a friend once stood up for you can make it easier to forgive them for a later argument.

Modern interpretation

People can recover from almost any wrongdoing eventually, but forgetting someone who genuinely helped you is a kind of damage that's hard to undo, because it corrodes trust in a way little else does. For example, ghosting the mentor who once vouched for you when you needed a chance can cost you a relationship no apology fully repairs.
