Modern interpretation
Just as the earth holds up even the people who dig into it, bearing with people who insult or provoke you is one of the most valuable things you can practice. It doesn't mean you're weak; it means you're steady. For example, staying calm when a classmate mocks you in front of others, instead of escalating the fight, usually leaves you looking like the more mature one.

Modern interpretation
Tolerating an insult is admirable, but actually forgetting it completely, so it stops taking up space in your head, is even better. Holding onto it, even quietly, still costs you something. For example, letting go of a friend's thoughtless comment so completely that it doesn't cross your mind again is more freeing than just biting your tongue about it.

Modern interpretation
Failing to make a guest feel welcome is one of the worst kinds of poverty, even poorer than having no money. And the greatest kind of strength is tolerating the provocations of people who don't know any better. For example, staying composed when a rude customer snaps at you for something out of your control shows more real strength than winning any argument would.

Modern interpretation
If you want your good standing and self-respect to stay with you for life, make patience part of how you live, not just something you reach for occasionally. It has to become a habit. For example, someone who consistently keeps their cool under pressure, at work or in friendships, tends to keep the respect that impulsive people slowly lose.

Modern interpretation
People generally don't hold onto much respect for those who lash out and retaliate at every slight, but they treasure someone who shows patience the way they'd treasure something precious. For example, a coworker who stays composed during a heated meeting earns more lasting respect than one who fires back at every criticism.

Modern interpretation
Striking back at someone who's wronged you might feel satisfying for a day, but staying patient earns you a kind of respect that lasts far longer, sometimes for the rest of your life. For example, choosing not to publicly call out a friend who embarrassed you, and instead letting your calm response speak for itself, tends to be remembered longer than the original insult.

Modern interpretation
Even when someone treats you badly, it's worth pausing to think about the trouble that kind of behaviour will eventually bring back on them, rather than responding in kind and adding more wrongdoing to the situation. For example, choosing not to spread rumours about someone who spread rumours about you keeps you from becoming the kind of person you were upset with in the first place.

Modern interpretation
When someone acts with excessive pride or aggression, the strongest response is often simply staying composed and letting your own restraint outlast their outburst. Patience can be its own kind of victory. For example, staying calm and professional when a boastful rival tries to provoke you at a competition often does more to establish your credibility than arguing back.

Modern interpretation
People who can tolerate harsh, disrespectful words from someone acting out of line show a kind of inner discipline that's genuinely rare, on par with people who've dedicated their whole lives to spiritual practice. For example, staying calm and unbothered when a stranger is needlessly rude to you online reflects real emotional maturity.

Modern interpretation
Fasting and other extreme forms of self-denial are impressive, but they still rank just below the discipline of tolerating other people's harsh words without losing your composure. Patience under insult is its own kind of hard-won achievement. For example, someone who can calmly shrug off a public insult without needing to fire back is showing a kind of self-control that's harder to master than many physical challenges.
