Modern interpretation

People who truly understand what's right and what belongs to whom would never seriously consider pursuing someone who's already committed to another person. That kind of restraint comes from clear values, not luck. For example, someone who respects boundaries won't flirt with a friend's partner, even if the opportunity seems to present itself.

Modern interpretation

Among people who've clearly crossed moral lines, few look worse than someone who tries to win over another person's partner. It's a particular kind of betrayal that damages trust on every side. For example, pursuing a close friend's partner behind their back is one of the fastest ways to destroy multiple relationships at once.

Modern interpretation

Someone who betrays the trust of a person who never suspected them, by going after their partner, is barely different from being dead to that friendship, because the trust that made it meaningful is gone. For example, secretly pursuing the partner of a friend who fully trusts you erases the friendship the moment it's discovered, even if it never is.

Modern interpretation

However impressive or accomplished someone is, none of it means much if they don't stop to consider the harm before pursuing someone who's already committed elsewhere. Status doesn't excuse the choice. For example, a popular, talented person who pursues a committed friend's partner loses respect fast, no matter how admired they were before.

Modern interpretation

Someone who thinks it's an easy, low-risk thing to pursue someone else's partner ends up carrying a reputation that doesn't fade, long after the moment itself is forgotten. Some choices follow you longer than expected. For example, being known as someone who broke up a relationship this way is a reputation that's hard to shake, even years later.

Modern interpretation

Resentment, guilt, anxiety, and a damaged reputation, all four tend to follow someone who pursues another person's committed partner, whether or not anyone else ever finds out. For example, someone who crosses that line often finds themselves anxious about being found out, and uneasy in a way that never fully goes away.

Modern interpretation

Someone who builds a genuinely good relationship is, among other things, someone who simply doesn't desire people who are already committed elsewhere. Respecting that boundary is part of what makes a relationship trustworthy in the first place. For example, a partner who doesn't even entertain the idea of pursuing someone else's partner is demonstrating real relationship integrity.

Modern interpretation

Not looking twice at someone who's already committed to another person isn't just the right thing to do, it's also a sign of real strength of character. Restraint here says more about someone than almost any other single choice. For example, staying loyal and respectful even when tempted by someone unavailable reflects a kind of maturity that's immediately noticeable to others.

Modern interpretation

Whatever else someone might hope to gain in life, the people who genuinely earn good things tend to be the ones who never cross the line with someone who's already committed to another. For example, people known for respecting others' relationships, rather than testing those boundaries, tend to build the kind of trust that opens doors elsewhere too.

Modern interpretation

Even someone who's made plenty of other mistakes is still better off if they've never crossed the line with someone else's partner. Of all the things worth avoiding, this one carries an outsized cost. For example, someone with a messy track record in other areas can still protect one thing, never chasing a friend's partner, and it matters more than it might seem.
