Modern interpretation

A life guided by virtue brings both respect and meaningful prosperity. It helps us earn trust, use resources responsibly, and enjoy success without shame. For example, a business owner who treats workers fairly may grow more slowly than someone who exploits them, but builds lasting loyalty and a good name. What is gained honestly brings deeper happiness.

Modern interpretation

Nothing improves a person's life more than practising virtue, and nothing causes greater harm than forgetting it. Good intentions matter only when they shape our actions. For example, a student may know that cheating is wrong but ignore that principle during an important exam. Remembering virtue at the moment of choice protects both their character and their future.

Modern interpretation

Practise goodness whenever you can, wherever you are, and do not treat it as an occasional activity. Small acts of fairness, honesty, and help can become a steady way of life. For example, a person can return extra change, give credit to a teammate, and speak respectfully even on an ordinary busy day. Virtue grows through repeated choices.

Modern interpretation

True virtue begins with a clean and honest mind. Public displays of goodness mean little if a person secretly plans to deceive or harm others. For example, someone may post about charity online but mistreat the people who work for them. Real virtue is shown when good thoughts and good actions agree, even when nobody is watching.

Modern interpretation

A virtuous life avoids four harmful habits: jealousy, uncontrolled desire, anger, and hurtful speech. These habits often feed one another and damage both the person who acts on them and the people around them. For example, jealousy may lead someone to insult a successful friend, while self-control allows them to congratulate the friend and improve themselves.

Modern interpretation

Do not postpone doing what is right by telling yourself that you will begin later. The good choices made today shape the person you become and the trust people place in you. For example, if someone notices a colleague being treated unfairly, speaking up now may protect that colleague and strengthen the person's own character. Virtue built over a lifetime remains meaningful when other possessions disappear.

Modern interpretation

The benefits of virtue can be seen in the way people live, not just explained in books. A person who acts with integrity usually carries responsibilities with greater peace, while someone who acts selfishly often feels burdened by fear and conflict. For example, two managers may face the same problem: the honest one can ask for help openly, while the dishonest one must keep hiding past actions. Conduct creates its own rewards and burdens.

Modern interpretation

Do not let a day pass without doing at least one good thing. Daily acts of kindness and responsibility gradually shape a meaningful life and leave fewer regrets. For example, a person might help an elderly neighbour, complete an honest day's work, or encourage someone who is struggling. Small good actions, repeated over time, build a strong path through life.

Modern interpretation

Happiness gained through honest and responsible living is genuine happiness. Pleasure gained by cheating, hurting others, or betraying trust may feel exciting for a moment, but it brings fear, guilt, or shame. For example, a family can enjoy a simple meal earned through fair work more peacefully than an expensive celebration funded by deception.

Modern interpretation

Our main duty is to do what is right and avoid what causes harm. Virtue is not merely something to admire in other people; it is a personal responsibility in daily choices. For example, returning a lost phone is a simple act of integrity, while keeping it because nobody saw you find it is a choice to avoid.
